In celebration of its fortieth anniversary, the SAA would like to collect untold stories about the Suzuki experience and the growth and impact of the Suzuki method in the Americas that fill gaps in our story and contribute to a richer and fuller understanding of our history.

We invite members to submit for publication a story that enlightens, inspires, or informs readers and at the same time, helps in some way to document Suzuki history in your part of the Suzuki community.

Is there a narrative, story, anecdote or memory you didn’t take the time to share and wish you had? Something recent or any time in the past? Featuring individuals or groups of people? About you, a teacher, a parent, your parent, one of your students, a colleague or a mentor? Funny, sad, or embarrassing? An event you were proud to be a part of?

Please contact us with a brief abstract and a few words about yourself if you would like to share your story! Email publications@suzukiassociation.org or write to us at the SAA office. First-time authors are encouraged to submit!

June is a month that I look forward to with special anticipation every year. June is the harbinger of all the delightful treats of summer. It promises a break from structured routine, the adventure of a vacation, and happiness ignited by flowers bursting open to spill their glorious colors. June is the traditional wedding month, a celebration of abiding love. It’s also the month in which we honor our fathers. And this celebration is not limited to just our own fathers. This occasion embraces our grandfathers, our uncles, our husbands—any male figure who has provided a warm lap, a comforting shoulder, a firm hand, a word of sage advice, or a path to follow. That’s a lot to celebrate!

My own father was a remarkable man. Even though he only received formal education through the eighth grade, he made it his lifelong practice to develop his mind by reading and to respect his body through healthful living and exercise. He provided a model that was not lost on his children. He valued the art of learning. In large part, I think his example is what initially drew me to the philosophy of Dr. Suzuki.

My father taught me that there’s a difference between training and education. Training allows us to cultivate a certain set of skills in order to perform a specific task. Education teaches us to think and to synthesize ideas. My father wanted me to have both. This, I think, is what Dr. Suzuki wished for all children. He wanted each child to have the benefit of excellent training so that he/she would become a skilled musician. He also wanted each child to be educated so that he/she would become a thinking human being, able to recognize beauty in all things.

This Father’s Day, I will not be giving any ties or #1 Dad coffee mugs wrapped in bright packages. This year I will pay special tribute to all of the men who have shaped my life in small or vivid ways. I will thank them with a star in the SAA Galaxy of Stars. I hope it will capture the essence of Father’s Day by making their smiles bright and their hearts swell. The tribute reads:

“Happy Father’s Day to all of the men who have inspired, trained, and educated me. I am the amalgamation of many distinguished individuals and I am forever honored to have shared a continuum of time and knowledge.”

With Mother’s Day approaching, we can’t help but be reminded of how much of who we are must be credited to our mothers. It was our mothers who planted the seeds that sprouted and grew into a vision of Suzuki music education for the world. And who among us isn’t happy about that?

Next ASJ Sneak Peak

Watch for the Spring 2012 American Suzuki Journal, coming to your mailbox soon!

Inside, read exclusive interviews with Suzuki grads and Conference 2012 Special Guests, guitarist Connie Sheu and violinist Nick Kendall of the trio Time for Three.

Here’s a sneak peak at our conversations!

Catching Up With Connie Sheu

Interview by Andrea Cannon

The Suzuki Guitar community already knows and loves you as the little girl in Book 1, whose photo we have seen for many years. What can you say about starting guitar at a young age and about studying the Suzuki Method with Frank Longay?

Little did I know that those photos of me would be in a book that I now use to teach my own students! I remember very clearly when Frank asked if he could take a few pictures of me for a new “project” of his. He gave me an oatmeal raisin cookie as a prize for sitting through the photo session. That was when I knew guitar could be a very lucrative profession!

Usually Suzuki teachers avoid the issue of competitions, at least in the beginning. Do you have thoughts for us as to if or when teachers might consider this for their students?

Any artist needs to be able to deal with the idea of competing with others in a balanced way. Shielding kids from this reality only makes any competition to be a bigger deal than it needs to be when they do one for the first time.

When did you know you wanted to make music your profession?

After college, I ended up taking a year off to sort myself out. I practiced very intensely for the first time in my life. I got into Juilliard for my master’s degree, and that’s when the real work began.… I didn’t know how to make guitar my “work” and I didn’t think through my interpretation of a piece—I just played however I felt, which wouldn’t cut it in the professional world.

Nick Kendall, Time for Three

Interviewed by Libby Felts

You have said that when you three met at Curtis, you were the only ones among your contemporaries who were improvising. Why do think that is?

For Ranaan, Zach and myself, we live in different parts of the country, and as kids, besides practicing and playing and loving classical music, we all had normal kid lives—we all had friends who were not classical musicians, and we listened to pop music. Me, coming from Washington, DC, a lot of urban hip hop, R&B, a lot of funk music and rock and roll—those experiences obviously fed into who I was as a musician.

There is a very playful quality to your music. Is that something that you still strive for?

It’s the old bow on the head, the Witch’s Dance. It’s the fact that through the Suzuki Method and through the philosophy Suzuki had, it’s okay to have fun while playing—in fact, it’s a must, it’s encouraged, is the sole reason why Time for Three plays, it’s the sole reason why we’re able to communicate with such a broad audience.

Can you share your favorite Suzuki memory?

There’s so many thousands of them. One of the most exciting moments was when Ronda Cole allowed me to dress up as a gypsy in a group recital, and I played Zigeunerweisen dressed as a gypsy.

With Mother’s Day approaching, we can’t help but be reminded of how much of who we are must be credited to our mothers. It was our mothers who planted the seeds that sprouted and grew into a vision of Suzuki music education for the world. And who among us isn’t happy about that?

Although my mother never had the opportunity to play an instrument, somehow she intuitively understood the value of music. Despite the financial hardship it incurred, she insisted that music lessons be a part of the education of each one of her six children. Mom is the one who steered me toward the violin and away from the saxophone. She may as well have been superwoman, extending her hand to deflect a speeding bullet! She’s the one who wouldn’t let me quit at a time when I was too immature to recognize the colossal value of meeting the challenges that mastering an instrument presented. She may as well have been Atlas carrying my world on both shoulders. Mom trusted me as she set me free to pursue a college education far away from home. She allowed me the imagination of Icarus albeit without the tragic ending. And she even embraced the man I chose to be her son-in-law, despite the fact that he was a saxophonist! Her heart is clearly that of Midas. Mom has steadfastly encouraged me every step of the way.

My mother is an extraordinary woman, just like your mother and a million others. I guess that would make them all quite ordinary, but we know that is not the case. They’re exceptional. Comic book heroine and mythological goddess exceptional. Because that’s what is required to be a great mother.

This Mother’s Day, I’m not going to resort to my standard gift of a potted plant or a coffee mug. I’m going to give Mom my gratitude for all the good in me that comes from her, wrapped in my words and displayed in the SAA Galaxy of Stars. You can see it there among the many other glimpses into peoples’ hearts. It reads:

“Thanks, Mom for building the scaffold for my life. You’ve given me the guidance and the freedom to soar. You’ve made it possible for me to pass on to others some of the wisdom in your beautiful soul. I love you. Happy Mother’s Day!”

The Indy Arts and Music Festival (THE Suzuki Institute in Indianapolis) is celebrating our third anniversary! The IAM Festival gives students the opportunity to learn, play and perform in a fun and unique summer camp setting. We have gathered top performers and teachers from across the city and across the country to give our students a superior experience. We invite you and your students to join us in Indy!

What makes us different from other Suzuki Institutes?
The IAM Festival, in its third year, remains one of the most cost-efficient institutes in the nation! We offer flexible and affordable options for all families, and a non-threatening learning experience for all students. We openly welcome students of all musical backgrounds and abilities, and continue to offer innovative and unique programming that reflects a commitment to developing the whole child. This includes electives like Tae Kwon Do, gymnastics, and visual arts!

All students are given the opportunity to perform in a recital; some are selected for one of our two honor recitals, and others perform in our final recital series on Friday afternoon. The Friday recitals are open to all students, and give younger students a chance to perform in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Nearby, the city of Indianapolis is supportive of our mission. The city is home to the world’s largest children’s museum and many other cultural destinations. Across the street from the festival, the local Community Center offers a week-long family membership for only $50! This includes unlimited use of their vast recreational facilities and kid-friendly waterpark.

During the week, well-prepared students have the opportunity to perform in our 4:00 p.m. recital series. We will also offer a field trip to a nearby park for a performance by local professional musicians.
