This course is excellent for parents, teachers of early childhood education, instrumental music teachers and college students who are interested in the philosophy of talent education. In six hours, you will learn about the concepts that arose from Shinichi Suzuki’s teaching and his belief that every child can learn. This course allows individuals to pursue teacher training and register their training with the Suzuki Association of the Americas. It is a pre-requisite for teacher training. Registration is at 9 AM. A summer camp June 10—15, 2013 that is for Suzuki families as well as advanced traditional students.

The Summer Institute is a week-long opportunity for Suzuki music students, their families, teachers and faculty to be a part of concentrated study that compliments the work that goes on in studios and homes throughout the year.

Lessons and classes are given for violin, viola and cello, including classes for the Twinkle and PreTwinkle students. Repertoire classes, ensembles, play-ins, student and faculty performances, are all part of the Summer Institute experience. Musicianship classes develop music literacy, and the string orchestras and ensembles further develop musical abilities.

Enrichment classes offered, such as jazz improv, rock cello, and fiddle, round out the week. Social activities and events build friendships between young musicians, families, and music educators from around the country, and even the world.

Students who would like a much more extensive experience with chamber music are invited to enroll in the Advanced Chamber Music Program. Only 32 students will be allowed to enroll – eight string quartets. All Advanced String Camp students are encouraged to enroll, and violinists in books 6-8, violists in books 4-5, and cellists in books 5-6 are also invited. First priority will go to the Advanced String Camp, with those in the upper Suzuki books filling in any openings. Enroll early, as it is first come, first served. You must also be enrolled in the full week institute as the chamber groups continue during this week.

This Institute has a unique jazz flavor provided by three great jazz musicians from the Los Angeles area who offer an unforgettable addition to our basic Suzuki program for both strings and piano.

Daily activities include master and repertoire classes, orchestra, music theory (Music Mind Games), beginning chamber music, bluegrass fiddling, and pre-twinkle classes. Featured events include intro to chamber music, daily recitals, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, a high level percussion class, the all American songbook, and the final grand concerts. Institute students who are at Violin Book 6, Viola Book 5, Cello Book 6, or Bass orchestral experience are Corelli Kaleidoscope participants. Violin master classes with Brian Lewis (by audition) are available.

One unique dimension to the program will be attention given to the life and music of Arcangelo Corelli.

Bass Curriculum

Bass Curriculum is for Non-Suzuki and Suzuki bass students. All levels: Beginner to Advanced String Camp. Bass students will have a master class where a few students share an hour a day with a master teacher. All bass students will be in one or two orchestras that will be scheduled to match ability levels. Depending on enrollment, there will be a group class where basses play in ensemble together. Bass students will not be in chamber groups.

Instruction in violin, viola, cello, piano, flute and harp (session 1 only) Tuition covers the core curriculum of: 1 masterclass, 1 group repertoire class, 1 musicianship/improvisation class, and 1 enrichment class. In addition, upper level students are placed into a string orchestra, or piano, flute, harp, or guitar ensemble for no additional fee. Enrichment classes include: bass, bluegrass for cellists/bassists, Carnatic violin, Celtic cello, collaborative piano skills, composition, Dalcroze eurhymics, fiddling, guitar for parents, penny whistle, piano styles, recording and podcasting, singing, and viola for violinists. Chamber music ensemble and learning to tune class are also possible for string players for an additional fee. (For chamber music placement a DVD for placement is due with registration.) The program includes daily student/faculty recitals. A daily music readiness program is also available for children ages 0 months -6 years who study an instrument at the pre-twinkle or twinkle level OR who have not yet started formal musical (specific instrument) instruction.

The Student Program is open to violin, viola, cello, and guitar students of all levels.

Classes

Lesson Class: The “Lesson” class is an opportunity to work individually with the teacher. Students will be scheduled in groups of 3 or 4 in an hour. Please come prepared to play a polished piece for the teacher.

Technique Class: The “Technique” class focuses on specific level-appropriate techniques on the instrument. It is an opportunity for students to review technique in a more relaxed, social atmosphere.

Repertoire Class: The “Repertoire” class focuses on review of repertoire. Rehearsal techniques and ensemble skills are polished in preparation for the final concert on Friday afternoon.

Chamber Music Class: This class is open to students in book 6 and above, who may elect chamber music instead of repertoire class. It is an opportunity to expand their repertoire beyond the Suzuki books. Students will be placed in small groups of two, three, or four depending on class enrollment. Each group will work with a faculty member for coaching and independently for practice together.

Orchestra Class (Book 2+): There will be two ASI orchestras, ranging from first experience orchestra to an advanced level orchestra. These orchestras provide a large group experience that encourages sightreading, ensemble, and rhythmic skills. Students will be placed in orchestra based on book level and orchestral experience.

Eurhythmics: Meaning “good rhythm”, eurhythmics classes teach rhythmic coordination between the eye, ear, mind and body. The classes teach fundamentals of rhythm, pitch, and phrasing, and children develop physical coordination while solving musical problems. Eurhythmics is included for all guitar and Book 1 violin, viola, and cello students in place of orchestra, as well as book 6+ students. It is available to students in books 2-5 as an elective.

Extra Curricular Activities

Bluegrass and Irish Fiddling: These hour-long classes will each meet for two consecutive days. You may choose to take Bluegrass or Irish only, or you may choose to take both courses. It is recommended that students be at least on Perpetual Motion to enroll in these classes.

Family Chorus: This will be a time for the entire family to sing together. Join in the fun and plan to attend the rehearsals on Saturday and Sunday to get a good start with the family chorus music. There will be a small fee of $5.00 per family to cover music and expenses.

Eurhythmics: Students who will not be automatically scheduled for eurhythmics (see student program notes above) may elect eurhythmics in addition to their lesson classes and orchestra. The fee for this course is $60 for the week.

Parent Talks: Faculty lectures are scheduled each day of the institute. These lectures cover topics such as Suzuki philosophy, parent-child interaction, and practicing methods. The lectures are free and open to all parents and teachers.

Institute Store: The institute store will be open during most class times during institute week. There will be many supplies available at the store including Suzuki books, stands, sheet music, pencils, reference books, games, and more!

GWSPI provides a supportive, piano-focused musical community. Our program is designed to help developing pianists become skilled and understanding players, performers, and musicians, and our setting and enrollment size are ideal for fostering a personal yet dynamic learning experience.

Activities for all students include a daily individual lesson in a masterclass setting, a daily student recital, and a facutly recital. In addition, students are placed in enrichment classes appropriate to their age and level of advancement—group repertoire class, keyboard improvisation, piano ensembles, Dalcroze, Orff, chorus. A handbell elective may be added if desired.

The Idaho Suzuki Institute provides the opportunity for students, parents and teachers to further their understanding of the philosophy and teachings of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki. The concentrated form of the student classes stimulate and motivate while reinforcing the skills developed in the normal course of study at home. The Institute allows parents to see the success of the Suzuki approach on a grand scale and to enhance the skills they need to help their children learn.

MASTER CLASS provides an opportunity to have an individual lesson with a master teacher. Lesson time may range from 15-20 minutes daily in length depending on the number of students in class.

TECHNIQUE CLASS provides an opportunity for students to improve their tone, intonation, bowings, vibrato, shifting, breathing, and may include improving on their reading skills, sightreading, chording, scales, etc.

REPERTOIRE CLASS provides an ensemble experience playing the Suzuki repertoire. Music from the repertoire list should be memorized. Students are developing performance skills which will be presented at their final concert.

Instruction in violin, viola, cello, bass, piano, guitar, and voice. Tuition covers the core curriculum of: 1 masterclass, 1 group repertoire class, 1 musicianship/improvisation class, and 1 enrichment class. In addition, upper level students are placed into a string orchestra, or piano, flute, harp, or guitar ensemble for no additional fee. Enrichment classes include: bass, bluegrass for cellists/bassists, Carnatic violin, Celtic cello, collaborative piano skills, composition, Dalcroze eurhymics, fiddling, guitar for parents, penny whistle, piano styles, recording and podcasting, singing, and viola for violinists. Chamber music ensemble and learning to tune class are also possible for string players for an additional fee. (For chamber music placement a DVD for placement is due with registration.) The program includes daily student/faculty recitals. A daily music readiness program is also available for children ages 0 months -6 years who study an instrument at the pre-twinkle or twinkle level OR who have not yet started formal musical (specific instrument) instruction.

Piano Institute (PI) provides a rich musical experience. Designed as a family experience, we provide a concentrated course of study with highly-trained, internationally-recognized Suzuki clinicians. Classes focus on developing technique, musicality, note reading, and ensemble playing. In addition, a variety of enrichment classes are designed to broaden our students’ institute experience. Participating in family-fun activities like Faculty Fun Recital, Stories and Songs in the Simulator, Old Fashioned 4th Fest, and Wacky PJ Contest / Play-in round out each exciting day at DFW WOW.
